For someone unfamiliar with Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, how would you describe the organization’s mission and core projects?

Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, a national 501(c)3 non-profit, is committed to raising funds for research to develop new, improved treatments for pediatric cancer, the #1 disease killer of children in the U.S. We provide inspiration and support for individuals, businesses and organizations to raise funds by hosting grassroots bake sales and other fundraising events.

Tell us about the organization’s background—how did it get started and how has it grown?

When 2-year-old Liam Witt was diagnosed with childhood cancer in 2007, his parents Larry and Gretchen were shocked to learn of the lack of effective treatments for pediatric cancers due to lack of funding. They pledged to support the funding of research for safer, more effective treatments for children battling cancer. In 2007, with the help of 250 volunteers, his mom Gretchen baked and sold 96,000 cookies, raising more than $400,000 for research. Word spread, and people nationwide began asking, “How can I help?” That’s how Cookies for Kids’ Cancer was born. Now, 7.5 years later, Cookies has granted $10 million to fund 80 childhood cancer research grants resulting in 32 new treatments now in clinical trial, available to children today. Good Cookies across the globe have hosted more than 7,000 events in all 50 states and 16 countries.

What are the most popular ways for kids and families to get involved with/ support Cookies for Kids’ Cancer?

We encourage individuals to Be a Good Cookie and get involved in their community through fundraising. This can take the form of a bake sale, a 5K, a lacrosse tournament, a cookie swap, a dress down day at school or really anything that inspires a supporter! The possibilities are unlimited and we provide step-by-step to all of our supporters no matter how they choose to Be a Good Cookie.

What makes Cookies for Kids’ Cancer different from other organizations in this space?

Cookies for Kids’ Cancer provides annual research grants to five of the nation’s leading pediatric cancer centers to advance the development of less toxic, more effective treatments for children battling cancer.  Each year grants are reviewed and given under the guidance of the Medical Advisory Board. We are also proud to say as of 2013, a portion of funds raised are also used to DOUBLE, dollar for dollar, the federal allowance per child enrolled in the Children’s Oncology Group’s Phase I & Pilot Consortium.

What can parents except to see from Cookies for Kids’ Cancer at the LA Baby Show and in the future in general?

We will be hosting a bake sale! We hope all of the families can stop by and taste some delicious treats from our cookbook and learn more about our organization. Also, families should be on the lookout for bake sales year-round plus our two signature events in the city: Be a Good Cookie Family Fun Day (a cookie and activity palooza for kids of all ages) and Chefs for Kids’ Cancer (an annual dinner featuring th city’s most beloved chefs preparing meals for individual tables).
