Ever wonder what’s in your breast milk and how to maximize its nutrition? Lactation Lab enables moms to educate themselves about their milk by using its easy home test kit. The Lab then tests the sample and provides mothers with test results designed to inform them about their milk’s specific dietary components.
Lactation Lab will be at the 2017 LA Baby Show, on November 4 and 5, at the Magic Box at the REEF, in DTLA, when the nation’s largest show for expectant and new families returns to Los Angeles. A family-friendly mega-event featuring everything to do with maternity, baby, and toddler – from top products to trusted parenting experts – the LA Baby Show will welcome thousands of expectant and new parents from Los Angeles County, the surrounding counties, and beyond!
Tickets to the LA Baby Show are $30 per family, and $20 per individual.
We spoke with Dr. Stephanie Canale, the company’s founder to learn more about the brand and what new parents can expect at the LA Baby Show.
For someone unfamiliar with Lactation Lab, how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings? I created Lactation Lab from my own experience as a mom. I wanted to know what was in my milk when I was breast feeding, but there were no milk tests, even as a doctor, available to me. I felt like there was a need for this product to educate moms everywhere. We spent over a year developing the tests so we could make kits available for moms to collect milk, send in and then get a personalized report of exactly what is in their milk. We focus our testing on factors that moms can change through diet and supplementation. Our goal is to empower moms to make better choices about their health and optimize their child’s nutrition.

Tell us about the company’s background. When did it start and how has it evolved since then?
This started from personal experience. I am a physician at UCLA and after having my second child, going back to work, pumping milk while running a busy practice, I just started to wonder what I was feeding my child. Based on medical knowledge and research, I knew breast milk was best for my baby but wanted to know what was in MY milk. This was of a particular concern when my daughter stopped pooping and gaining weight despite getting a high volume of milk (I had no issues with milk production). I just wondered at the very minimum how many calories was she getting.
What are the most popular and/or newest services from Lactation Lab?
We offer simple and easy-to-use tests so mothers can learn for the first time about the nutrient make-up of their breast milk, improve their diet and nutrition, and safeguard against exposure to heavy metals and other toxins that are harmful to a child’s growth and development. We are not trying to scare moms, but to empower them. For example, one mom was tested and found to have high levels of mercury in her milk. By cutting back on her fish consumption, she was able to normalized her mercury levels.
What sets Lactation Lab apart from similar products in the marketplace?
We are the only USA-based company that is offering nutrient analysis of breast milk including testing for potential environmental toxins that can find their way into breast milk. Lactation Lab provides families with a unique tool to monitor and improve the long-term health of their children.
What can parents expect from Lactation Lab at the LA Baby Show?
Reaching out to new moms, educating them about how diet and supplements can affect levels in their milk and networking with people concerned about infant health. We are offering a 20% discount to any new moms visiting our booth (Booth 1-27) to introduce them to Location Lab. We will also be serving lactation cookies! We look forward to meeting new parents and helping them provide the best nutrition for their children.
