In honor of the first-ever LA Baby Show coming up on November 5-6, we’re catching up with some of the leaders in the LA maternity and baby community. Kidsland is a must-visit shopping destination for expectant parents seeking high-quality brands and products, with assistance from a staff who knows their stuff. To learn more about Kidsland, we caught up with partner Paula Kim!

For an expectant parent who is unfamiliar with your store, please describe it. How do you see its mission and sensibility? What are its core offerings?
Kidsland is a true one-stop shop for expectant parents that are seeking high-quality brands and products that may not be accessible in big box stores. Our mission is to stay cutting-edge and complete with our offerings, and to be fully stocked with inventory on-site at all times.
The average tenure of our staff is 3+ years, which makes for a valuable guide to new parents navigating the confusing world of baby products. Kidsland’s specialty is baby gear, and the store has been awarded the distinction of Best in Baby Gear and Best of LA a number of years over from Los Angeles Magazine, LA Weekly, and other respected sources.
How long has the store been in business? Any interesting tidbits you’d like to share about the background of the store or its owner?
The current owner and operator, Katherine Kim, founded the store in 1986. Starting from humble beginnings selling toys at the LA swapmeet, Katherine slowly expanded into baby products by first offering potty and feeding accessories. 30 years later, Kidsland is a thriving business in the heart of LA, offering thousands of products in every category both locally and nationally through our website, www.kidslandusa.com.
Any favorite advice for people shopping for a nursery for the first time? Or for a stroller or car seat?
Just like you would with a new car, baby strollers and car seats need to be tested and driven to find the right one that fits your lifestyle. My advice is to come out and test-drive a few, learn the features from experts, and make a sound decision. Nowadays we are too reliant on “online reviews” and/or friends’ recommendations, but everyone’s lifestyles–and therefore needs–are different.
As far as shopping for nursery furniture, my advice is to consider spending a bit more money for a quality set. Quality furniture is built to last and may stay with you for child number 2+, or as your child grows.
Notice any interesting trends in shopping for nursery or baby gear lately?
I’ve noticed new parents are demanding more for their dollar than just a couple of years ago. Fancy and loud have been replaced with practical and toned-down. Current trends are fully-loaded, mid-priced strollers in dark or gray tones. Unisex colors are becoming popular in bedding as well.
What are one or two hot products that you love right now (and why)?
One of my favorite products is the BabyZen YOYO+ stroller. It is one of those high-quality, yet highly useful, products. This is the revolutionary stroller that is compact enough to fit in the overhead compartment on a plane, can be used from newborn on up, and now takes infant car seats.
