As a special preview of the LA Baby Show, coming up on the weekend of November 5-6, we have interviewed or profiled many of the Show’s vendors and participants. You can read all about them on this Show blog, but of course the real fun is experiencing the Baby Show in person.
Tickets to the Baby Show are $30 per family, and $20 per individual, and can be purchased here.
Many parents wish their baby gear was cleaner, but it’s hard to find the time or energy to actually clean it. Thankfully, Tot Squad comes to the rescue of busy parents every day by providing the care, safety and installation of their baby gear both in retail settings and at home.
To learn more about Tot Squad, we caught up with founder Jennifer Beall Saxton.
For parents who might be unfamiliar with Tot Squad, how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
Tot Squad offers cleaning, safety and repair services for strollers and car seats. We are a mobile service and travel to a different retail location daily throughout Los Angeles and Orange County. We also have an office location in Culver City and do house calls as well as special events with preschools, daycares, churches, as well as apartment and office buildings.
Car accidents are a leading cause of death for children, and with as many as 90% of car seats being installed incorrectly, our mission is tied to our team of certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians who can provide car seat safety education and installations. We offer four cleaning packages that use natural, non-toxic cleaners from the Honest Company, and can repair most stroller brands, including Bugaboo, Orbitbaby, Uppababy, and Maclaren.
How frequently should parents clean their baby gear?
We recommend parents clean their gear every three to four months to keep it not only looking great, but also in tip-top shape from a health and safety standpoint. Car seat buckles can get sticky and difficult to unbuckle in an emergency and strollers can harbor dangerous bacteria like E. coli and salmonella. By regularly maintaining your baby gear, it can extend its useful life and be passed down to siblings or families in need. (We are happy to help donate your used strollers to the Good+ Foundation).
What is your long-term vision for Tot Squad?
My dream is to build the equivalent of the Geek Squad for the baby industry and to build in-store service centers with major retailers. We recently sold our first franchise in Washington DC and expect many more locations to open soon. It is my dream to build a brand that becomes a household name around the country.
What inspired you to found Tot Squad, and how long have you been in business?
I founded Tot Squad in 2010 as a way to help busy parents. While getting my MBA at Northwestern, I did a survey of over 1000 parents and caregivers and more than 60 percent said they wished their baby gear was cleaner, but just didn’t have the time or energy to clean it. So many of my friends and family had young children and I saw them struggling to juggle it all. As we have grown into the leading national brand for baby gear services, we have established partnerships with major stroller & car seat manufacturers, retailers, and non-profits. Last year, we won 2nd place out of more than 500 businesses in a global competition for millennials in franchising, with CNBC calling us a “red hot” new franchise concept!
What can parents expect to see from you at the Los Angeles Baby Show?
We will be doing stroller cleanings for the first 100 people at the show each day. A vacuum and wipe-down is free, or show attendees can upgrade to deeper cleanings for steaming, sanitizing or stain removal with $20 off regular prices. We take care of the dirty work because we love helping families!
