For someone unfamiliar with MomieGo, how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
MomieGo is a free location-based, parent-friend matching app. Our mission, our sole purpose is to build authentic parent-tribes. MomieGo profiles are all about the parent — so we can match them with local parents they have more in common with, other than just simply being parents! When two parents swipe right on each other, both receive the ‘It’s a Match!’ alert and they can start messaging and setting up playdates from that point.
Tell us about the company’s background. When did it start and how has it evolved since then?
As a single mom and ex-model, I found myself with precisely the problem that MomieGo addresses in that none of my friends in my area were having a baby at the same time as I and so I looked for a solution. Finding mommy groups a bit all consuming, I yearned for a simple was to meet new mommy friends when my time was so limited. From this emerged the basic idea to help moms match with like-minded individuals in their area in a simple, efficient way.
My challenge was how, as a single mom with limited time and a non-technical background, to build such a business. Fortunately, my daughter’s godfather is an entrepreneur in the Bay Area who mentors aspiring entrepreneurs in his spare time through his Silicon Valley Internship Programme or SVIP
(www.siliconvalleyinternship.com) which brings aspiring entrepreneurs over to the Bay Area to learn about entrepreneurship while working with a start-up. Through this, I met my business partner, Chris (Chris Howard) who brought his technical skills and business acumen to the partnership and allowed us to build the service and test it in the market. After an amazingly positive initial response we leveraged the resources of the SVIP and my own contacts in the entertainment business to propel the company forward.
The response from moms has been overwhelming. Our biggest challenge has been building up the density of moms around the country so we can address this clear need. We started a focus in Los Angeles where I am based (again!) and we now have critical mass there so moms are getting frequent and good matches. Our biggest feedback from moms around the country and indeed around the world is that they wish we could launch in more places faster because the need we are addressing is apparent all over the world. We remain entirely privately held with no outside investment at this stage.
What are the most popular and/or newest features from MomieGo?
Parents love our swipe left/right feature and the ‘It’s a Match!’ alert, particularly parents who never got to experience Tinder. The location-based feature is especially loved by military moms and traveling families. Dads really appreciate the MomieBro category.
What sets MomieGo products apart from other parenting apps?
The main thing that sets MomieGo apart from other parenting apps would be that we are the first of its kind, we pioneered the ‘Tinder’ style parent connection space launching last year. MomieGo is the first and only friend matching resource for dads (MomieBros) — members choose whether they want to see only same gender parent profiles or both. Unlike any other parent-friend finding resource (FB mommy groups, parks, mommy groups etc) MomieGo matches parents based on their interests and similarities, not their babies! We want parents to be excited about their new friendships. Happy Parents = Happy Kids! Lastly, the parenting apps that were available to me when I was a new mom were so busy with information I’d forget why I logged in. Our simple design and easy-to-use features are mommy/daddy-brain friendly. Our purpose is clear. No fluff. Just swipe right to say hi or left to say bye.
What can parents expect from MomieGo at the LA Baby Show?
Parents can expect information about the app and super cute MomieGo merchandise, incuding onesies, canvas totes and shirts.
