To learn more about Swado Swaddle, we spoke with Judy Kou, the company’s co-founder and director of product marketing.
For someone unfamiliar with Swado Swaddle, how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
Tell us about the company’s background. When did it start and how has it evolved since then?
Swado is a brand under our company, GoodCatch. The company was just officially registered in March 2017, but our first product, Swado Swaddle, has been under development for 3 years now! I am a mother of two boys, and my first one was a sensitive baby. I functioned on two hours of sleep everyday for what seemed like forever, because none of the swaddles in the market met my needs. I was too clumsy to get him swaddled tightly with a traditional square blanket, the zipper ones did not contain his arms securely enough to inhibit Moro reflex, and the Velcro ones were noisy and scratchy. While that sleep-deprived walking-zombie phase was years ago, when my brother Jack and I discovered the magic invention of Good-Catch Fabric™, I immediately thought of the wonders it could do in making a better swaddle to help thousands of babies and parents sleep better.
We currently have two models available on the market, the very thin muslin cotton Summer Lite and the organic cotton Breezy Comfort. Our new model is a kimono-inspired-design one, but we haven’t come up with a model name yet. We will also offer a thicker, two-cloth layer model for the colder weather regions because our users’ (from Scotland and parts of Canada) feedback has been that our current models are too light for their region.
Being a full-time mom, my progress was going, but very VERY slowly. Also, not having any prior experience in the textile industry, we had to learn from scratch. My very naive original idea – use the innovative self-adhesive fleece-feel soft material to make a perfect swaddle — turned out to involve more user trials and design revisions than I can count on both hands. This past March, my brother decided to support our effort full force by setting up a company and hiring four employees. Having a dedicated team enabled us to move much faster. We launched a mini-production of our first model on Kickstarter in April, and we are now in the process of finalizing the new model, targeting for launch on Indiegogo in November.
What sets Swado Swaddle apart from similar products in the marketplace?
Swado Swaddle is different from any other swaddle in the market in that it is as easy as Velcro, but minus the scratch and the noise; as quiet as zipper and buttons, with size and arm position versatility. Its amazing magical feature is something one needs to touch and feel to believe. As one of our moms commented: “I am now a believer, we call it the Magic Burrito with our baby wrapped inside.”
What can parents expect from Swado Swaddle at the LA Baby Show?
We will set up games for parents to touch and feel Swado Swaddle and to experience its unique features. There will be a limited quantity of 120~200 pieces of the organic cotton Breezy Comfort for parents to purchase on the spot. Visitors can play our games and win a discount to be applied to their purchase.
